¹The sea at that time had turned pitch-black and glossy. ²Bulging monsoon clouds blurred the sky above. ³Vicious blasts of wind pounced, relentlessly pushing rain and waves to the shore. ⁴An army of huge waves sent endless reinforcements. ⁵Upon reaching the shore, these gloomy walls of water coiled up and crashed thunderously on the seafloor. ⁶Wave after wave came crashing and crashing in a ceaseless, caroming cannonade, rushing to the assault one after another to force the beach to recede, but the beach stayed put and refused to yield, and they retreated in a sizzling slush of seawater. ⁷Wave after wave had to regress with the lame look of a loser, leaving behind white foam that smeared the sand with telltale signs of defeat, but still more waves came rolling in impetuously, doomed yet undaunted.

¹The sun had gone into hiding, as if it did not want to know what was raging on.

¹Amid the coconut trees a little hut nestled in a recess of the hill. ²It seemed to be trying to keep out of sight, but the wind and the rain were unrelenting. ³At times, violent gusts made its nipa-thatched roof flap.

¹A small laterite track ran from the main road to the beach, parting neatly the long rows of coconut trees into two sections. ²In the hot season, this track was full of people of all nationalities, but now the rain was its only custom.

¹From the junction, down the better part of the track to the beach, was a restaurant built as a large lean-to. ²The only part that had walls was the kitchen at the back. ³The nipa thatch of the roof had been covered with nets as protection against the wind. ⁴The restaurant floor had been built at a slightly higher level than the road. ⁵On the side exposed to the rain, a thick, dark-green canvas was stretched across the whole length, and the wind shook and slapped it deafeningly.

¹A short distance from the restaurant was a small shop which appeared to be selling souvenirs to tourists, but it had been set up so simply it looked more like an ordinary hut. ²On the laterite landing in front of it, an antediluvian motorcycle stood basking in the rain, leaning on one side. ³Its colour was so flaky that it was hard to see any trace of the original red.

¹The rain kept thrashing down and gave no sign of letting up.

¹A passenger vehicle came hobbling along the laterite track. ²As it drew closer, one could see that it was a pickup van whose double row of passenger seats at the back had been replaced with wooden benches to transport more goods and more people, and by the same token its body had been dolled up with stripes of garish colours, which said something of the crude tastes of the locals.

¹"Otto! ²Otto!" ³The hand that wore a surfeit of bracelets and rings banged on the door frame. ⁴He called out as if he was certain there was someone inside because the key was not in the door.

¹Chuan leaned his backpack against a large table set against the wall. ²On this table Otto did his work and it bore a mess of things - a thermos flask, a bottle of water, a flashlight, a pot of glue, leather off-cuts, a bottle of dye for joins, spools of thread, patterns for bags, a chopping block, a cutter, and an ashtray placed next to a packet of cigarettes.

¹The boards were thick with dust and trails of footprints as if the owner had not swept or cleaned the floor in months. ²There were no goods left inside the shop. ³The clothesline was empty too. ⁴The bamboo-plaited wall, once used to display goods, was now displaying cobwebs.

¹"It was raining hard in town too." ²Chuan changed the subject. ³He pulled out a towel and set out to dry his hair. ⁴"I don't get it. ⁵It really rained like hell in town, but how come the eaves of the buildings are so goddamn short? ⁶You can't shelter from the rain under them. ⁷If I were the governor, I'd put a roof over the whole town." ⁸He hung the towel on the clothesline.

¹"Then keep the key of the shop with you."

¹"Why?" ²He looked up and stared at Otto.

¹"I'll go back to Bangkok in a day or two. ²I've got nothing to do here. ³It's a fucking drag. ⁴There's hardly a farang around any more, so I've got no one to sell to. ⁵If I stay here, I'm afraid I'll end up with sweet fuck all." ⁶Otto smiled at his friend, raised his glass and watered his inner self.

¹"His pa used to eat pork a lot, boiled pig's leg, you know, fat and all. ²The doctor said he had a built-up of fat in his arteries that left him partly paralysed. ³Lit'l Hip told me his pa ate pork at every meal. ⁴He had it cooked at home. ⁵His pa's grown pale now. ⁶The doctor ordered him to give up eating it," Chuanchua said, making the story sound amusing.

¹"I bet that before he offers it to the monks, he must sniff at it for sure," Otto ventured and laughed. ²"The father is addicted to pork, and the son is addicted to grass." ³Otto laughed out at his involuntary choice of words.

¹Chuanchua, too, shook with laughter as he stirred the liquor and soda in his glass with a spoon.

¹"We entered a food shop and sat down but we didn't dare order anything. ²We just kept laughing. ³We saw the shop owner's face, and everything else for that matter, all stretched out of size, stretching and then shrinking like in a cartoon. ⁴The people there were eyeing us as well, so we had to walk out. ⁵This way, how could we eat?" ⁶Otto laughed as he told the story.

¹"I don't know if it's available right now. ²But I think it's nothing compared to the high you get out of toadstools. ³There's plenty of'm this time o' year. ⁴You should try'm. ⁵They're real great." ⁶He laughed without reason. ⁷"Speaking of being stoned on toadstool makes me think of Larn."

¹"Why?" ²Chuanchua asked at once. ³Instinct told him this must be a juicy story.

¹"The sonofagun likes to walk around naked when he's stoned."

¹"In the daytime or at night?"

¹"กลางวันหรือกลาง คืน?    "

¹"Heck, at night anyone can do it. ²You don't need to be stoned. ³In broad daylight he did it. ⁴In front of Lueang's shop, with lotsa people around." ⁵He lifted his glass and drank.

¹"So what happened to Larn?"

¹"He flipped out through and through. ²Well, you know how he is, always afraid of not getting drunk. ³You must've noticed: when there's only a little liquor left, he quaffs it down as fast he can. ⁴He's afraid of not getting drunk. ⁵But toadstools, it takes time before they take effect. ⁶The first few spoonfuls nothing happens yet, right? ⁷So the fucker starts complaining, 'I ain't high yet. ⁸I ain't high yet.' And he goes on wolfing it down, and before long, the toadstools begin to work." ⁹Otto laughed. ¹⁰"He - he kept sitting there for a while, fretting and fuming. ¹¹Then he said he couldn't stay there any longer, he was gonna take a dip. ¹²I told him, 'Sure, no need to tell me. ¹³You do what you have to.' Otto laughed, and so did Chuanchua. ²³"He didn't quite make it to the sea. ²⁴He walked from just about here to the middle of the road over there, and then he laid down on the sand and started to swim like a child. ²⁵His fucking hands sent sand flying all over as he swam breast-stroke across the dune. ²⁶All eyes were on him. ²⁷He kept at it for hours until he grew tired and fell asleep. ²⁸Lueang then covered him with a piece of cloth. ²⁹I don't know if he was afraid Larn would get sick or if was afraid the farangs wouldn't come to his shop."

¹Chuanchua laughed until he choked on his cigarette. ²After he stopped coughing, he told Otto,

¹"That's right. ²His wife's fucking cracked, man." ³Otto laughed. ⁴"When he went to stay at his wife's place, none of us wanted to have anything to do with him. ⁵We hate her. ⁶She's fucking cracked. ⁷His mother-in-law didn't want him to hang out with us either. ⁸Whenever we went to see the sonofabitch, they always told us he wasn't home. ⁹And Larn's fucking crazy too. ¹⁰I don't know how the hell he could stand living with 'em. ¹¹The goddamn house was like a jail." ¹²There was anger in his voice. ¹³"The sonofabitch's crazy about his wife. ¹⁴Even when his dad died, he didn't want to attend the funeral! ¹⁵We had to swear at him and drag him to the bus terminal, put him on a bus and buy him a ticket so he finally went, otherwise he'd never have gone."

¹"Fuck, man, that's too much. ²Not attending your father's funeral, that's real shitty." ³His voice tensed up. ⁴"Is his wife so good-looking that he's under her spell like that, or what?"

¹"Where did he find her?" ²Chuanchua meant his friend's wife.

¹"In a temple." ²Otto lit a cigarette, his face now bland, deprived of the merriment of a moment ago.

¹"What! ²Is this true?" ³He looked Otto in the eye as if to find out whether he was joking or speaking seriously.

¹"It is. ²That evening I went with him too."

¹"You mean they did it in the temple?" ²Chuanchua asked with laughter in his voice.

¹"No - his wife was a nun." ²Otto looked more lively as the story flashed across his mind.

¹"เปล่า...    เมียมันบวชชี อยู่" ²สีหน้าของอ๊อดโต้เริ่มดี ขึ้น    เมื่อ เขานึก ถึงเรื่อง นี้ ขึ้นมา

¹"What's the story? ²Come on, tell me about it."

¹"เรื่องมัน เป็นไงวะ ²ไหน เล่า ให้ ฟังซิ"

¹Otto lifted his glass, drank, put the glass down and puffed on his cigarette. ²Smoke came out of his nostrils as he started telling the story.

¹"At first, the woman was broken-hearted and tried to kill herself. ²She swallowed some fucking pills but she didn't die, so she became a nun. ³Well, she happened to be a friend of Samlee's girlfriend. ⁴At the time, Samlee and Larn were always together, as they were running a T-shirt printing shop together. ⁵One day, Samlee was invited by his girlfriend to visit a friend of hers who was a nun in a monastery. ⁶Samlee asked Larn to go along as well. ⁷They were both drunk, of course. ⁸Well, when Larn was told all about her, he felt for the woman. ⁹You know as well as I do that the sonofabitch had never had a girlfriend, what with being drunk day in, day out. ¹⁰As soon as he saw her, he fell in love with her. ¹¹The woman was broken-hearted, so he felt for her all the more, meaning to heal her wound and all that-" Otto laughed. ¹²Chuanchua smiled as he sipped his drink, his eyes still on Otto's face.

¹"Later on, he came to ask me to go with him, but I refused. ²It was none of my business, and going into a monastery isn't my idea of fun. ³The sonofabitch plied me with drinks, and when we hit it off fine, of course I couldn't say no. ⁴So we went, riding this bike, Toby here." ⁵Otto pointed at the motorcycle parked in front of the shop.

¹"When we got there, he went up to see the woman in her cell, leaving me to wait for him downstairs. ²I sat there on my own and at some point I fell asleep. ³By the time I woke up, it was fucking dark already. ⁴I went upstairs to tell him to go back. ⁵But the motherfucker was asleep as well. ⁶He wasn't just asleep: he was holding the nun's hand in his, actually, and snoring too. ⁷Anyway, I woke him up for us to go back. ⁸Later, the woman left the nun-hood and stayed with him. ⁹And the monastery no longer allows men to visit the nuns, because of our goddamn Larn-"
