¹Every time he took his five-year-old grandson by the hand and led him from the classroom, he said, "He's just a child! ²Children need time, you see?" ³He spoke happily and smiled at me as if he were apologizing for something. ⁴He was a cheerful old man with a smile always playing at the corners of his mouth. ⁵It was an optimistic smile, mixed with a little trickiness, too. ⁶Maybe it was that smile that made me stand and, without a word of protest, watch him lead his grandson out of the school building.

¹But the kindergarten teacher didn't like that kind of smile, as she had let me know often enough already.

¹"You're the principal!" she told me. Why don't you tell him? Tell him that once the children come to school, they are in the care of the teachers. ²Doesn't our school have any rules?"

¹I didn't argue with her. ²And I accepted that everything she said was correct. ³But again and again, I had been unable to bring myself to do anything about him. ⁴That's what led the kindergarten teacher, and lots of other teachers, too, to say that I had lost control of the situation and was being far too easy on "Grampa." ⁵They said there was no reason why he had to come and pick up his grandson like that every day, even when he had dropped the boy off less than an hour before!

¹I kept thinking about that. ²In order to keep the peace with the kindergarten teacher and to maintain the integrity of the school regulations, I decided that I had to take action. ³But where could I start?

¹I didn't know Grampa very well--only in his capacity as guardian of one of our students. ²I didn't even know where his house was. ³I knew only that he lived at the far end of the village, and that he dropped off and picked up his grandson, instead of the boy's mother and father. ⁴It was possible that this was Grampa's first grandchild, and that made him almost giddy with love for the boy, which of course is something that happens to many older people. ⁵He brought his grandson to school and picked him up every day without a trace of boredom, even though he could have let the boy walk to school with other students. ⁶Any five-year-old boy born in the country can come and go by himself; it's really no big deal.

¹Grampa came to school early in the morning, some days even before me and the other teachers. ²On the narrow road, built up high so that it wouldn't flood in the rainy season, we could see Grampa, with his white hair and kindly bearing, slowly leading his little grandson, who seemed to me to lack confidence. ³In Grampa's free hand were the boy's schoolbag and food container, as if Grampa himself were a student.

¹"Doesn't look much like rain today," he usually greeted me while taking a worried look at the sky. ²Then he gently helped his grandson climb the stairs and walk straight to the kindergarten classroom at the end of the building. ³They went in, and while Grampa put away the schoolbag and food container, the boy shuffled along to his desk. ⁴He was a shy boy who kept to himself and was almost abnormally sullen. ⁵I suspected that was because his grandfather didn't let him go off and just be himself.

¹After putting everything away, Grampa went over to the boy at his desk, leaned down, and whispered to him for a while, as if he were telling him the ending to some important story. ²After that he backed out of the room. ³But he didn't go home right away. ⁴Instead, he stood peering in from the doorway, as if he were in mourning. ⁵Never taking his eyes off his grandson, he watched the boy's every move. ⁶And that smile of his, full of kindness, grew wider whenever the boy did something he liked. ⁷On the other hand, anytime one of the rougher kids teased the boy, you could see Grampa's mouth become grim with apprehension. ⁸Sometimes he forgot himself and started to come back into the room. ⁹But then he thought better of it, and went back to keeping watch right where he had been.

¹So he stayed there, darting in and out of the room like that, until the morning bell rang, and he had to go outside.

¹แกจะ ยืนลับๆ    ล่อๆ    ดูหลานชาย อยู่อย่างนั้น กระทั่งระฆังสัญญาณ เข้า แถวดัง ขึ้น    พ่อเฒ่าจึงจำ ใจถอน เท้าจากมา   

¹At that time, all of the students hurried to line up in front of the flagpole. ²The kindergarteners made the most noise and could never arrange themselves in an orderly row. ³At our school the teachers didn't have to keep a close watch over the student line-ups. ⁴We trained the students to discipline themselves. ⁵Or the older students went to check on the younger ones. ⁶But for many days now we had had a new teacher, too--a bit older he was, with a kindly bearing. ⁷This new teacher arranged the students in a row from tallest to shortest, sternly forbidding them to get out of line.

¹"Let the students take care of themselves," I heard the teacher who was on duty tell him. ²"They have to learn about order and discipline. ³Let them watch the older students and copy what they do."

¹"ปล่อยให้ เด็กๆ    ดูแล ตัว เอง เถอะพ่อเฒ่า"    ผม ได้ยิน ครู เวรคนหนึ่ง ลง ไปบอกแก    ²"เด็กๆ จะต้องเรียนรู้ เรื่อง ความ เป็นระเบียบวินัย    ³เขา จะคอยดู ตัวอย่างจาก เด็กรุ่น พี่ และทำ ให้ เหมือนพวก นั้น "   

¹"Can't be done," snapped Grampa. ²His expression and the tone of his voice were startling. ³"They're just kids. ⁴They can't do anything yet. ⁵They don't even know where they should stand. ⁶Look! ⁷You see? ⁸That little fellow has gotten out of line already!" ⁹Before he even finished speaking, he was hurrying to push the boy back into line.

¹I saw a look of frustration on the teacher's face. ²She seemed to give up and did not say anything else.

¹ผมเห็นครู เวรส่ายหน้าอย่างอ่อน ใจ    ²ในที่ สุด ก็ต้องปล่อย ให้แกทำหน้าที่ต่อ ไป โดย ไม่ทัดทานอะไร อีก

¹Even when the students raised the flag, Grampa still didn't leave. ²He just went off a little ways and stood at attention, with his chest puffed out and arms pressed straight to his sides, just like the students. ³The teachers were chuckling about the air that Grampa assumed. ⁴Some of them wondered out loud if he wasn't quite all there.

¹"Maybe he wants to be a teacher himself," someone muttered sarcastically.

¹We hoped that once the students went off to their classrooms, Grampa would finally head home. ²Surely he, like any other villager, had all kinds of things waiting for him to do at home, especially now that the rains had started. ³It would be perfectly natural for him to be getting ready to plow fields or do other kinds of farmwork. ⁴Yes, he was an older man without a real job--I supposed because his children wanted him to rest--but there was no reason for him to hang around the school. ⁵His only business there was to drop off his grandson in the morning, then pick him up in the afternoon. ⁶That's it!

¹And finally he did leave, after all. ²The school came alive with the sounds of teaching and studying in the various classrooms. ³I started in on some work that had been piling up, for I didn't actually have classes, as the other teachers did. ⁴But it seemed that only a few moments had passed before I saw Grampa appear outside the kindergarten classroom once again. ⁵I had no idea which way he had come. ⁶A moment later, he was leading his grandson from the room.

¹"You know, he's still a child," Grampa told me with his usual bright smile. ²"Little children need time to adapt. ³Soon everything will be better."

¹"อย่างว่า...    ไอ้หนูมันยัง เด็ก อยู่นะครู"    แกยิ้ม และบอกผมอย่าง อารมณ์ดี เช่นเคย    ²"เด็กๆ    มันต้องการ เวลาบ้างนั่นแหละ    ³อีกหน่อยมันคงดี ขึ้น"

¹"But-" I started to say.

¹"แต่...    "    ผมพยายามพูด

¹"Very soon. ²Not long at all," Grampa cut in. ³He gave a smile that was both an apology and a way of excusing himself at the same time.

¹"อีกสัก พัก ²นั่นแหละครู..."    ชายชราแย่งพูดขึ้น เสียก่อน    ³แกยิ้มให้ผม อีกทีอย่างขอ โทษขอโพย และขออนุญาต ไป พร้อมกัน

¹I tried to speak, but no words came out. ²The old man led his grandson back down the stairs and away.

¹ผมไม่ทันพูดอะไร    ²ชายชราก็จูงหลานชายของแก เดินลงบันได ไป เสีย แล้ว

¹"This had better be the last time," the kindergarten teacher snarled at me as soon as Grampa had left. ²"If he tries it again, I won't stand for it. ³I'm going along teaching, and he bursts in and takes away his grandson like it's nothing. ⁴He doesn't show any consideration for me at all. ⁵What does he think I am?"

¹I told her to calm down. ²After all, he had gone away with the boy already. ³"Let him go this time. ⁴I'll take care of it," I promised.

¹ผมบอกให้เธอ ใจ เย็นๆ    ²ไหนๆ    แก ก็มารับ เด็ก ไป แล้ว    ³"ปล่อยแกไป อีก ครั้ง เถอะ...    ⁴แล้วผม จะจัด การ ให้"    ผมรับ ปาก

¹"This time we'd better see some results," she demanded sharply.

¹"คราวนี้ต้อง ได้ผลนะ"    เธอ ยังกำชับมา เสียง แข็ง   

¹Actually, I was just as angry as she was. ²Who did the sly old man think that teacher was? ³And for that matter, who did he think I was? ⁴For everyone, there comes a day when we run out of patience. ⁵And for me, that day had come.

¹I jammed the papers I had been working on back in a folder and hurried down the stairs without telling anyone. ²I went off after the old man. ³I didn't take my motorcycle--I didn't want him to know I was coming. ⁴I made up my mind that this time I had to succeed. ⁵I would follow him to his house and straighten things out once and for all.

¹ผมรีบยัดเอกสาร เข้าแฟ้ม และรีบ เดินลงบันได โดย ไม่ยอมบอก ใคร    ²ผมรีบตามชายชราไปทัน ควัน ³ไม่ยอม ใช้รถมอเตอร์ไซค์ผม ไม่ อยาก ให้แกรู้ ตัว ⁴ถึงอย่างไรผม ก็ ได้ตัด สิน ใจ แล้ว    คราวนี้ แหละผม จะต้องทำ ให้ สำเร็จ    ⁵ผมจะตาม ไปพูดกับ แก ให้ ถึงบ้าน เอากัน ให้รู้ ดีรู้ ชั่ว ไปเลยทีเดียว   

¹They didn't have much of a head start. ²And anyway, I knew I had to catch up. ³Suddenly I felt more and more excited. ⁴I felt as if I was some kind of detective, shadowing a criminal. ⁵Thinking like that made me become even more careful.

¹พ่อเฒ่ากับหลานชายเพิ่งคล้อย ไป ไม่นาน    ²ถึงอย่างไร เสียผม ก็ต้องตาม ให้ทันจน ได้    ³ทันใดนั้น ผมรู้ สึก ตื่น เต้น ขึ้นมาอย่างบอก ไม่ ถูก    ⁴มันเหมือนกับ ว่า ในตอนนี้ ผมกำลัง เป็นนัก สืบ ไม่มี ผิด    นัก สืบที่คอยสอดแนมพฤติการณ์ ของคนร้าย    ⁵คิด ขึ้นมาอย่างนี้ ทำ ให้ผมต้องระมัดระวัง ตัวมาก ขึ้น   

¹I had barely left the schoolgrounds when I caught sight of their backs in the distance. ²A wave of anger passed over me again. ³The old man acted as if the school were a place where he could come and go as he pleased. ⁴He didn't care in the least how I felt. ⁵My position--principal--had no meaning to him whatsoever.

¹ออกจากบริเวณโรงเรียนมาได้ ไม่ ไกลนัก ก็ เห็นหลังพ่อเฒ่ากับ หลานชายของแก    ²อยู่ไวๆ    วูบหนึ่ง ผม กลับฉุนเคือง ขึ้นมา อีก    ³ชายชราคนนี้แกทำ เหมือนกับ ว่าโรงเรียน เป็นสถานที่ที่แกนึก จะ เข้าออกเมื่อไหร่ ก็ ได้    ⁴แกทำโดย ไม่ ได้นึก เกรง ใจผมสักนิดเดียว    ⁵แกเห็นตำแหน่งครู ใหญ่ของผม ไม่มี ความหมายอะไรเลย

¹The more I thought about it, the more bitter I felt. ²In a moment or two I would be teaching him a lesson. ³He and the boy were still walking along ahead of me, slowly but purposefully. ⁴He was completely unaware that, at that very moment, he was being followed. ⁵I walked carefully, making sure the distance between us was not too close, but not far enough behind them that they would get out of sight. ⁶At the same time, I was looking for a place where I could hide, in case he turned around. ⁷I wanted to duck in and hide as fast as possible.

¹ยิ่งคิด ก็ยิ่ง เจ็บ ใจ    ²ประเดี๋ยวเถอะ    ผม จะต้องทำ ให้แก ได้สำนึก เสียบ้าง    ³ชายชรากับหลานชาย ยัง มุ่งหน้า ไปช้าๆ    อย่างชะล่า ใจ    ⁴แกหารู้ไม่ว่า ในตอนนี้ แกกำลัง ถูกสะกดรอย เสีย แล้ว    ⁵ผมเดินอย่างระมัดระวัง    คอย รักษาระยะ เอา ไว้ ให้คงที่ ไม่ ใกล้ เกิน ไป และ ไม่ ไกลจนทำ ให้สองคนนั้น คลาดสายตา    ⁶พร้อมกันนั้น ผม ก็คอยดูทางหนีที ไล่เผื่อว่าถ้า แกหัน มา ⁷ผมจะ ได้หลบ เข้าข้างทาง ได้ทันท่วงที   

¹The way to his home was just a narrow footpath, overgrown and actually kind of lonely-looking. ²On both sides, bushes grew up over my head. ³And in some places, vines and creepers grew out, half covering the path. ⁴It was easy to see that few people ever passed this way. ⁵The ground became moister as it began to slope downhill, and the footprints of the old man and the boy grew clearer. ⁶The farther we went, the muddier the path was becoming.

¹ทางเดิน ไปบ้านของชายชรา เป็นทาง เท้าเล็กๆ    รก    แคบ และดู เปล่าเปลี่ยว    ²รอบข้างเป็นป่าละเมาะ สูงพ้น หัว    ³พื้นทางบาง แห่งมีเถาวัลย์เลื้อยทอด เข้ามาเกือบ ครึ่ง    ⁴บอกให้รู้ ว่า ไม่ค่อยมีคน ใช้ เส้นทางนี้ บ่อยนัก    ⁵ดินเริ่มแฉะชื้นเมื่อถึงบริเวณที่ลาดลง ต่ำ    รอย เท้าของพ่อเฒ่า และพ่อหนู น้อยปรากฏ ชัด ขึ้น    ⁶ยิ่งออกมา ไกลทาง ก็ยิ่ง ยุบยวบ ด้วยดินโคลนมาก ขึ้นทุกที   

¹It was difficult to walk out there wearing shoes. ²Finally I took them off and hid them in a bush beside the path. ³I rolled my trousers up to my knees so that I would be able to walk comfortably and so that they wouldn't get stained. ⁴Then, without wasting any more time, I took off after the old man again.

¹รองเท้ากลาย เป็นอุปสรรคสำหรับ ผม ไป เสีย แล้ว    ²ในที่ สุดผม ก็จำถอดออก แล้ว เสือกซ่อน ไว้ ในพุ่ม ไม้ข้างทาง    ³รีบพับขากางเกงให้พ้นเลยเข่าเพื่อ จะ เดิน ได้สะดวก และ ไม่เปื้อนเปรอะ    ⁴จากนั้นผม ก็เร่ง เดินตามชายชรา โดย ไม่ยอม ให้ เสีย เวลา อีกต่อ ไป   

¹He and the boy were out of sight when I reached an even muddier place. ²The smell of mud and decaying grass from both sides of the path was overpowering. ³A tall stand of trees kept me from seeing the old man and the boy. ⁴But the footprints were still fresh and clear--only now, suddenly, I couldn't see the small footprints of the boy anymore.

¹คนทั้งสองหาย ไปจากคลองสายตา    เมื่อผม เดินมา ถึงตรงที่ เป็นโคลนเลอะเทอะ    ²กลิ่นดินโคลน และ กลิ่น หญ้าเน่ากำซาบมาจากสองข้างทาง    ³ผมยัง ไม่ เห็นชายชรากับ หลานชาย    เพราะมีแนวป่า สูงบัง ไว้    ⁴แต่รอย เท้าที่ ย่ำ ไว้ใหม่ หมาด ชัดเจนสม่ำ เสมอ เพียง แต่ว่า ในตอนนี้ ผม ไม่ เห็นรอย เท้าเล็กๆ    ของพ่อหนู เสีย แล้ว

¹I leaned down for a closer look. ²Up to that point, I'd always seen both sets of footprints. ³Now, though, there were only the old man's. ⁴He had sunk down deep, as if he'd been carrying some kind of heavy load. ⁵In places, his footprints overlapped one another. ⁶Sometimes they veered to the left, sometimes to the right, like the footprints of someone who had been drinking.

¹I was concentrating hard on the footprints, like a hunter on the trail of a helpless deer, when I looked up to discover that the path in front of me had disappeared. ²All I saw was a cloudy expanse of water that had popped up from out of nowhere.

¹ผมมัวแต่ก้ม ตรวจดูรอย เท้า เช่นเดียวกับ พรานป่ากำลังแกะรอยกวางเคราะห์ ร้าย    พอเงยหน้า ขึ้นมา อีก ครั้ง ทาง เดินข้างหน้า ก็หาย ไป เสีย แล้ว    ²เห็น แต่ แผ่น น้ำสีขาว ขุ่นแผ่ เป็นบริเวณกว้าง ขึ้นมา แทนที่

¹It was the old creek that flowed through the center of the village and on to a big swamp not far from there. ²One time I had come out to watch the villagers fishing, but that was a long time ago, and in the dry season, too. ³The water then wasn't as deep or as wide as it was now. ⁴It had been raining almost every day for a long time, and the creek had risen and spread to the edge of the grove. ⁵It must have been about fifty meters across. ⁶The current was so slow that I could hardly see it moving. ⁷The surface was too cloudy and dark for me to guess how deep it was.

¹นี่เป็นลำห้วย เก่า แก่ที่ไหลผ่านกลางหมู่บ้าน และ ไป สิ้น สุดตรงบึง ใหญ่ ไม่ ไกลจากนี่ ²ครั้ง หนึ่ง ผมเคยออกมาดูชาวบ้านจับ ปลา แต่นั่น ก็นานมา แล้วนั่น เป็นตอนหน้าแล้ง ³น้ำ ไม่ลึก และกว้าง เหมือน ในตอนนี้ ⁴ในหลายวัน ที่ผ่านมาฝนตกติดต่อกันแทบทุกวัน น้ำ ในลำห้วยเอ่อท้น และแผ่อาณา เขตมา ถึงชายป่าละเมาะ    ⁵คะเนด้วยสายตา แล้ว ไม่ น้อยกว่าหนึ่ง เส้น    ⁶น้ำ ในห้วยไหลเอื่อยรินจนแทบ จะมอง ไม่ เห็น ความเคลื่อน ไหว    ⁷ความลึกนั้น ผม ไม่อาจคาด ได้เพราะ ผิว น้ำ ขุ่นข้น และดูลึ กลับน่ากลัว

¹For a moment, I stood frozen. ²Not because I was worried about how deep the water was, but because of what I saw in front of me.

¹ผมจำหยุด นิ่ง อยู่กับ ที่ ชั่ว ขณะ    ²ไม่ใช่เพราะกลัว ความลึกของห้วยกว้างนี่หรอก แต่ภาพที่กำลัง เห็น อยู่เบื้อง หน้านั่นต่างหาก

¹There was the old man, walking unsteadily in water up over his knees. ²His body was bent forward, like a rice stalk heavy with grains. ³Both of his arms were outstretched and swaying as he tried to keep his balance, yet he still kept hold of the food container and the schoolbag. ⁴The boy, meanwhile, was sitting precariously on his shoulders, clinging tightly to his grandfather's head. ⁵The old man was straining with the effort, yet barely managing to inch his way forward. ⁶Muddy water clouded up behind him each time he pushed ahead. ⁷I wanted to call out to him--I wanted to, but for some reason my throat tightened, and I couldn't say anything. ⁸At last, when the old man reached the other side with his grandson, I decided to wade in after him.

¹ชายชราเดินโงนเงน อยู่กลาง น้ำลึกเลย หัวเข่า    ²ร่างนั้นงองุ้ม และโน้ม ไปข้างหน้า เหมือนข้าวอุ้มรวง    ³มือทั้งสองกางออก และแกว่ง ไปมา เป็นการ ช่วยพยุง ตัว ขณะที่ ยังคงหิ้ว กระเป๋า หนังสือ และปิ่นโต ไว้ดัง เดิม เหนือร่างของพ่อเฒ่ามีร่างของพ่อหนู น้อย นั่งกางขาคร่อมคอของแก ไว้อย่างหมิ่นๆ ⁴เจ้าหนูโอบศรีษะของชายชรา ไว้ แน่น    ⁵พ่อเฒ่าเคลื่อนไปข้างหน้าอย่างช้าๆ และดูทุลักทุเล เหลือ เกิน ⁶น้ำโคลนสี ขุ่น ไล่ตามหลัง ไป เป็นทาง    เมื่อแกยก เท้าสลับข้าง    ⁷ผมอยากตะโกนเรียกแก    ผม อยากทำอย่างนั้น แต่ ไม่รู้ เพราะอะไร    ลำคอของผมตีบตื้น ไปหมดจน ไม่อาจเปล่ง เสียงออกมา ได้    ⁸เวลาผ่าน ไป อีก ไม่ น้อยชายชราจึงพาหลานข้าม ฝั่ง ไป ได้ และนั่น เองที่ทำ ให้ผมรีบตัด สิน ใจลุย น้ำตาม ไปทันที

¹Finally I reached their home. ²It was a thatched-roof hut that stood apart from the rest of the houses. ³A ring of bamboo surrounded it like a fence, and I had to pass through a bamboo arch to go inside. ⁴It was so quiet there that I could hear my own heavy breathing.

¹ในที่ สุดผม ก็มา ถึงกระท่อม น้อยของพ่อเฒ่า    ²มันเป็นกระท่อมหลังเล็ก    หลังคามุงแฝก ตั้ง อยู่ปลีกออกมาจากบ้าน เรือนหลัง อื่นๆ ³มีพุ่มไผ่กอหนาล้อมเป็นรั้วทาง เดิน เข้าบริเวณกระท่อมต้องลอดซุ้มไผ่ เข้า ไปรอบๆ    ⁴กระท่อมเงียบสงัด    เงียบเสียจนผม ได้ยิน เสียงหอบจากทรวงอกของ ตัว เอง   

¹The old man was more surprised than I thought he'd be when I quietly appeared. ²The boy ran to hide behind him and stayed there, afraid to peek out. ³Grampa looked at me; his smile was different this time.

¹พ่อเฒ่าตกใจ เกิน กว่าที่ คิด    ทันทีที่ เห็นผมปรากฏ ตัว ขึ้นอย่างเงียบๆ    ²พ่อหนูวิ่งผลุบ ไปหลบ อยู่หลังชายชรา ไม่กล้า แม้ จะโผล่หน้าออกมามอง    ³พ่อเฒ่าหันมา สู้หน้าผม และยิ้ม ด้วยรูปรอยที่ต่าง ไปจากเดิม

¹"He's still a child," the old man said defensively. ²"He really is just a child."

¹"ก็ไอ้หนูมัน ยัง เด็ก อยู่นั่นแหละ"    แกเอ่ย ด้วย เสียง ตื่นๆ    ²"มันยัง เด็ก อยู่ จริงๆ    นะครู"   

¹"And his mother and father?" ²I snapped. ³"Where are they?"

¹"แล้วพ่อแม่ของแกล่ะ"    ²ผมหลุดปากออกไปทันที    ³"พ่อแม่เด็ก ไป ไหน"   

¹The old man spoke more evenly. ²"That's me."

¹"ผมนี่แหละครู"    ²เสียงพ่อเฒ่าหนัก แน่น ขึ้น

¹"You?"

¹"พ่อเฒ่านั่นรึ"   

¹He laughed when he saw my expression. ²His friendliness and his almost-sly smile were back again. ³"All children should have parents. ⁴And he's no different. ⁵But it just so happens that not every child can be so lucky."

¹แกหัวเราะ หึๆ    เมื่อ เห็นสีหน้าผม    ²ท่าทางเป็นกัน เอง และรอยยิ้ม อย่างคนเจ้า เล่ห์เพทุบาย กลับมาหาแก อีก ครั้ง หนึ่ง ³"เด็กๆ    มันควรมีพ่อแม่นั่นแหละครู    ⁴และไอ้หนู ก็ เหมือนกัน    ⁵แต่อย่างว่า... เด็กๆ ก็ ไม่ ได้โชคดี ไปทุกคนนั่นหรอก"

¹The old man's voice suddenly caught. ²He gave a mighty swallow while turning to soothe his grandson. ³I heard him whispering quietly, his voice full of concern.

¹เสียงของชายชราหาย ไป ในก้อนสะอึกที่แทรก ขึ้นกลางคัน    ²แกกลืนน้ำลายจนคอ ยืดพลางหัน ไปปลอบพ่อหนู น้อย ให้คลายกลัว    ³ผมได้ยิน เสียงแกแผ่ว เบา แต่อ่อนโยน และเปี่ยมท้น ด้วย ความอาทรอะไร เช่นนั้น

¹He turned to me again and invited me inside the hut. ²I followed him; the little boy ran inside and hid. ³The hut was cramped and messy. ⁴On one side was an open room with piles of bamboo splints scattered around. ⁵Here and there, I saw some unfinished woven baskets.

¹ชายชราหันมาทางผม อีก ครั้ง พร้อมออกปาก เชื้อเชิญ ให้ ขึ้น ไป นั่ง ในกระท่อม    ²ผมเดินตามหลังแก ไป    พ่อหนู น้อยรีบ วิ่ง ขึ้น ไปก่อน แล้วผลุบหาย เข้า ไป ในห้อง และ เก็บ ตัวเงียบ อยู่ ในนั้น ³กระท่อมของพ่อเฒ่ารกและคับ แคบ    ⁴ด้านหนึ่ง เป็นห้องโล่งมีเศษตอก ไม้ไผ่เหลากองซ้อนกันอย่าง ไม่ เป็นระเบียบ    ⁵ใกล้ๆ    กันนั้น ผม เห็นกระบุงกระจาดที่สานค้าง ไว้วางซ้อนกัน อยู่หลายลูก   

¹"He's lived with me since he was a baby," the old man said. ²"His parents are divorced. ³His father went one way, his mother another. ⁴My son--that's his father--took him along when he went to work in Bangkok many years ago, then brought him back here. ⁵And after that--"

¹"มันอยู่กับ ผมมา แต่อ้อน แต่ออก"    ชายชราว่า ขึ้น อีก    ²"พ่อแม่มันแยกทางกัน    ³พ่อไปทางแม่ ไปทาง    ⁴ลูกชายผมนั่นแหละที่เป็นพ่อไอ้หนูมัน    มันหอบหิ้วกัน ไปทำงานกันที่กรุงเทพฯ ตั้งหลายปีมา แล้ว กลับมา อีกที ก็หอบเจ้า คน น้อยนี่มา ให้    ⁵แล้วจากนั้น ..."

¹He stopped for a moment, remembering. ²"After that, well, what I mean is, I haven't seen his father again since then. ³His mother found someone new long ago. ⁴So it's just been the two of us here together."

¹พ่อเฒ่านิ่ง ไป ชั่ว ขณะ    คล้าย จะตรึกตรองอะไรบางอย่าง    ²"จากนั้น...    คือหมาย ถึงว่าผม ยัง ไม่เคย เห็นหน้าพ่อมัน อีกเลย    ³แม่มันนั้นก็มี ผัวใหม่ ไปนาน แล้วแหละครู    ⁴ผมก็เลย อยู่กับ ไอ้หนูสองคน"

¹"That's a rough life," I said.

¹"ลำบากแย่สิ"    ผมว่า   

¹"Is it?" ²He laughed softly. ³"I don't know about that. ⁴He's fine here. ⁵And so am I. ⁶But the thing is, he's still a child. ⁷Of course, he should go to school. ⁸Children have to study, don't they?"

¹"ลำบากรึ"    ²แกพูดแล้ว หัวเราะ เบาๆ    ³"มันก็ ไม่เชิงหรอกครู    ⁴ไอ้หนูมันก็ สบายดี    ⁵ผมเอง ก็ สบายดี    ⁶แต่อย่างว่านั่นแหละ    ไอ้หนูมัน ยัง เด็ก ⁷แต่ ถึงอย่างไรมัน ก็ควร ไปโรงเรียน อยู่ดี    ⁸เด็กๆ    น่ะ    มันต้องเรียน หนังสือ หนังหา จริงมั้ยครู    "

¹"When do you have time to work?" ²I was looking at the unfinished baskets.

¹"แล้วพ่อเฒ่า ได้ทำงานตอน ไหนล่ะ"    ²ผมถามพลางชายตาไป ยังกระบุงกระจาด เหล่านั้น

¹"Oh, whenever I can," he said slowly, picking up a small basket. ²"It gives me enough money to buy candy for him. ³My grandson likes candy, you know. ⁴He likes candy more than anything."

¹"ก็ทำมันเรื่อยๆ    นั่นแหละครู"    แกพูดเนิบ    ช้าๆ    พลางหัน ไปเอื้อมคว้ากระบุงโกย ใบ น้อยมาถือ ไว้    ²"มันก็พอ ได้ขาย เอา เงินมา ซื้อขนม ให้ไอ้หนูมันนั่นแหละ    ³ไอ้หนูมันชอบกินขนม    ⁴มันชอบยิ่งกว่าอะไร ทั้งหมด"   

¹Every time he mentioned the boy, I saw the smile returning to his lips. ²He put special emphasis on the words "my grandson." ³It was the subject that he liked talking about most.

¹ทุกครั้ง ที่พ่อเฒ่าเอ่ย ถึงไอ้หนูของแก    ผม ได้ เห็นรอยยิ้ม อย่างมี ความ สุขจุด ขึ้นที่ มุมปากของแก เสมอ    ²แกจะเน้น เสียงตรง คำว่า    "ไอ้หนู"    หนัก แน่น    ³และดูราวกับ ว่านั่น เป็นเรื่อง ที่พิเศษ ไปกว่าเรื่อง อื่นๆ   

¹"And when you take him to school?" ²I wanted to know how he managed to get everything done.

¹"แล้ว เวลา ไปส่งหลานที่โรงเรียนหละ"    ²ผมถามอีก ความ จริงผม อยากรู้ ว่าแก เอา เวลา ไหนมาทำของพวก นี้

¹"Usually I do it at night," he said, reading my mind. ²"My eyes are still good. ³And I like working at night. ⁴It's nice and cool."

¹"ส่วนมากผมทำตอนกลาง คืน"    แกบอก เหมือน อ่าน ใจผมออก    ²"ตาของผมยังดีนะครู    ³ผมชอบทำงานตอนกลางคืน ⁴มันเย็นดี.."

¹He talked about himself and his grandson for a while longer, and then I told him I had to be leaving. ²I'm not exactly sure why I felt I should go back so soon, especially since I hadn't done what I had set out to do.

¹ชายชราเล่าเรื่อง ของแกกับ หลานชาย ให้ ฟัง อีก พักหนึ่ง จากนั้น ผมขอ ตัว กลับ    ²ผมไม่รู้ เหมือนกันว่าทำไมต้องรีบ กลับ ในเมื่อผม ยัง ไม่ทัน ได้ทำอะไรสักอย่างอย่างที่ คิด ไว้

¹As I was about to go down the ladder from the hut, I thought of another question. ²"Do you carry him across the stream every day?"

¹"พ่อเฒ่าต้องแบกพ่อหนูข้ามห้วยทุกวันสิท่า"    ²ก่อนจะลงบันไดผมนึก คำถาม ได้ อีกประโยค   

¹This time he didn't answer, but came outside and looked at the sky, the way he always did when he greeted me at school. ²"Doesn't look much like rain today," he said, though he sounded worried.

¹คราวนี้ชายชรา ไม่ตอบ แต่รีบออกมาที่นอกชานแหงนเงยดู ฟ้า เหมือนที่เคยทำ เวลาทักทายผม ²"วันนี้ ฝนคง ไม่ตก อีกนะครู"    แกเอ่ย ขึ้น ใน น้ำ เสียงออกกังวล    " ก็มันตกมาหลายวัน แล้วนี่นา"

¹I looked at the sky, too. ²"You're right. ³It's not going to rain."

¹ผมเงยดูฟ้าบ้าง    ²"ใช่... ³มันไม่น่า จะตก อีก"

¹"I'm sure of it," he told me with his familiar bright smile.

¹"มันไม่ตก แน่ๆ    นะ"    แกพูดกับ พลางยิ้ม ให้อย่าง อารมณ์ดี    ยิ้ม ตาม แบบที่แกเคยยิ้ม ให้ผม    ทุกๆ    วัน

¹I agreed with him again. ²I don't know why I was so sure about that, because at that very moment dark clouds were gathering overhead, growing thicker by the minute.

¹ผมยืนยัน คำพูดของ ตัว เอง อีก ครั้ง ²ไม่รู้ เหมือนกันว่าทำไมผม ถึง ได้มั่น ใจ ถึง เพียงนั้น ทั้งที่ ในตอนนี้ บน ฟ้า ก็ ยังมัว หม่น ด้วยหมู่เมฆ และมันทำท่า จะ เกาะ ตัวหนา ขึ้นทุกที

¹I went back the way I had come. ²The mud washed over my feet the whole way down to the stream. ³The water wasn't really all that deep, but it was cold, and the mud was sticky and thick. ⁴It sucked my feet down, and I could hardly pull them back out. ⁵As I made my way across that stream, it was hard work just lifting my legs.

¹ผมกลับจากกระท่อมของชายชราตาม เส้นทางเดิม ²โคลนแฉะท่วมหลังเท้า ตลอดทางที่ลาดลงลำห้วย    ³น้ำ ในห้วย ไม่ลึกนักหรอก แต่ เย็นเฉียบ และโคลน ก็หนาหนัก มันเหนียวหนืด ⁴และดูด เท้าของผมจนแทบถอน ไม่ ขึ้น    ⁵กว่าจะข้ามห้วย กลับมา อีก ฝั่ง ได้ผม ก็แทบ จะยกขา ไม่ ขึ้น เอาทีเดียว   

¹I couldn't find my shoes. ²It had been a foolish mistake on my part not to leave some kind of marker beside them. ³The bushes grew very thick there, and they all looked the same to me--same kind, same shape. ⁴I couldn't see any difference. ⁵So I walked along in my bare feet, still looking at the footprints pressed into the ground.

¹ผมหารองเท้าที่ซ่อน ไว้ ไม่เจอ    ²เป็น ความสะเพร่าของผม เองที่ ลืมทำ เครื่องหมาย ไว้ ให้ เป็นที่ สังเกต    ³พุ่มไม้ริมห้วย ขึ้นหนา แน่น เป็น พืช พันธุ์เดียวกัน    ทรงพุ่มเดียวกัน ⁴จนแยกไม่ออก ถึง ความ แตกต่าง    ⁵ผมเดิน เท้า เปล่า กลับ ไปอย่าง ไม่รีบร้อน    พลางก้มดูรอย เท้าที่ ยังคง ฝัง อยู่ตาม พื้นทาง   

¹As I walked along I found myself thinking of a doll I had seen once in a store. ²The soles of its feet were so small and pretty that I don't even know how to describe them--just like the boy's footprints that I was looking at in the muddy path. ³They looked cute, in a way, and I seemed to appreciate them now more than I had before.

¹ทันใดนั้น ผม ก็นึก ไป ถึงตุ๊กตา เด็ก ตัวเล็กๆ    ที่เคย เห็นตามร้านค้า    ²ตุ๊กตาที่มีฝ่าเล็กกระจิดริดน่ารักน่าเอ็นดู และ ให้ ความรู้ สึกบางอย่างที่บอก ไม่ ถูก    ช่าง ไม่ต่าง ไปจากรอย เท้า น้อย    ของพ่อหนูที่ปรากฏบนทางโคลนนี้ เลย    ³ดูเล็ก    น่ารักและ เป็นรอย เท้าของ เด็กมากกว่าที่ผม เห็น ในตอนแรก เป็น ไหนๆ   

¹Beside them, of course, were the bigger, heavier prints, which seemed to have been mashed into the ground with a post. ²It was strange, but I imagined that those big footprints were smiling up at me. ³It was a kind smile, too, as calm and cool as the water in the stream.

¹เคียง คู่ ไปกับ รอย เท้าของพ่อหนู เป็นรอย ย่ำกว้าง ใหญ่ ฝังลึก    บอกสัณฐาน แบบ พิมพ์หนาเตอะเทอะทะ เหมือน ตีนเสา    ²แปลกจริง...ผม กลับรู้ สึกว่ารอย เท้ากว้าง ใหญ่นี้ ยิ้ม ให้ผม    ³มันเป็นรอยยิ้ม ของคน ใจดี และ อารมณ์ เย็น... เย็น เหมือน น้ำ ในท้องห้วย

¹"He's just a child, you know ... ."

¹"ก็ไอ้หนูมัน ยัง เด็ก อยู่นี่นา..."

¹Those words came back to me. ²But not for long. ³A moment later, I heard instead the scolding voice of the kindergarten teacher, growing louder and louder in my ears.

¹ผมแว่วยินประโยคที่คุ้นหูนั่น อีก ²แต่ ก็ เพียงวูบเดียว เท่านั้น ³เพราะต่อจากนั้นคล้ายๆ    กับ ว่า จะ ได้ยิน เสียงกราดเกรี้ยวของครูชั้น เด็กเล็กดัง มาอื้ออึง
